Figure 5 Instructions

NEU466G, Dr. Harris · Class documents

Overview

Figure 5 combines your work from the autosegmentation, nascent zone, and glia labs (Week 10, Week 11, Week 12, and Week 13). You do not submit it on its own: it is graded as part of the final lab report, where it is worth 6 points. The legend can have at most 200 words.

The mock-up below shows the layout to aim for. It has 11 panels, A to K.

A mock-up of Figure 5 as a grid of labeled boxes. Red boxes A, C and E are errors and green boxes B, D and F are the fixes. Blue box G is a 3D view. Below them, panel H is an EM image of a nascent zone, panel I is a 3D view of the nascent zone over a translucent PSD, and boxes J and K are the perisynaptic astroglia panels.
Mock-up of Figure 5 from the autosegmentation, nascent zone, and glia labs. A stand-in; the teaching team will replace it with an example made from the class series.

Panels

Panel What to show
A EM image of a split spine (an error in the autosegmentation)
B The same spine after you fixed the split
C EM image of an error in a contact trace (c-trace) of a PSD
D EM image of the c-trace after you fixed it
E EM image of an error in the vesicles
F EM image of the vesicles after you fixed them
G 3D view of the surface of your dendrite with the fixed spines, PSDs, and axons (translucent) containing vesicles (solid spheres)
H EM image of a nascent zone (NZ)
I 3D view of the nascent zone over a translucent PSD
J EM image of an axon-spine interface with perisynaptic astroglia and glycogen granules
K 3D view of a spine with the 3D perisynaptic astroglial process and the glycogen granules as spheres

In the mock-up, red boxes mark errors (A, C, E), green boxes mark the fixes (B, D, F), and the blue and black boxes mark the 3D and nascent zone and glia panels.

The legend

The mock-up ends with the line "Fig. 5: Figure title, panel descriptions A-K, scales (word count)." Your legend needs a descriptive title, a description of each panel in order, every arrow and color explained, the scales, and the word count at the end. See Figure Legend Example and Tips.
